Lip Sync Panasonic BD35 Problems

Hello. I'm new to this so sorry if this is a dumb question, or the terminology isn't correct.

Anyways....I recently purchased a Samsung LN52A650 LCD HDTV and Panasonic DMP-BD35 player, and am having a slight audio issue when using the Blue-Ray player. When watching blue-ray movies, there seems to be a slight lip sync issue. (My receiver is an older non HDMI receiver, the Denon AVR 900) - The receiver is so old, there is no optical digital input or multi channel audio ports.

The set up is as follows:
Blue-ray player to TV with HDMI cable.
TV to receiver with R/L audio in / out (red and white RCA cables)

I have no issues with the surround sound. All 5 speakers are getting sound,
including the subwoofer. The issue is that audio sometimes doesn't match the lips of the actors. Not sure if it is the Blue Ray discs or what - it was especially bad with "hitman".

Is there anything I can do to remedy this issue? I'm really hoping I can get
away with using this receiver, it would be sweet to get one, but a new receiver is definitely not in the budget.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Michael,

Welcome to the forum! Well, although you may be getting "all 5 speakers" you are not getting discrete surround sound. The only way to get discrete 5-channel surround is with a digital connection - HDMI, coax digital or fiberoptic digital. The best you'll get with your current set-up is Dolby Pro Logic (matrixed decoding).

Your lip synch delay is most likely being caused by the TV converting the digital audio signal in the HDMI stream to analog for output to the receiver. Try connecting the BD35's stereo (analog) output (white and red left/right RCA jacks) directly to your receiver instead and see if this helps. Also, make sure you have set the BD35 to Downmix="Surround-encoded" in the Audio set-up menu so that you do get the matrixed surround sound effects in the 2-channel output.

Also, you should really consider getting a new receiver with HDMI audio support. With the BD35 and your TV you could be getting some really excellent sound and images but your receiver is the limiting factor. The Onkyo TX-SR606 supports the full suite of surround sound formats over HDMI, with 4 HDMI inputs and is currently selling for less than $400. Here's a couple of links:

I realize I mentioned a new unit wasn't in the budget, but have you reviewed or know anything about the Denon AVR-2309CI? If I'm going to buy something, I want it to be something that will last, and be compatible with the future. My current Denon is in great shape, but seems to be outdated. Any info on this would be appreciated. It is higher than I was anticipating spending, but if it is a quality unit, I might be able to convince myself to scrape up some cash.

We haven't reviewed any of the Denon gear yet (one receiver is pending a review by one of my senior guys, but he hasn't finished up with it yet) but I do own an older Denon receiver myself and have been happy with it, and overall the Denon receivers do get positive reviews.

The AVR-2309CI would be a fine choice and they've recently started selling it on Amazon for a bit of a discount below MSRP which is rare for Denon gear:

If you do buy it online, you need to get it from an authorized dealer (Amazon is fine) as Denon will void the warranty if you buy it from an unauthorized dealer.

I guess there is no problem between your panasonic blu-ray and Samsung LCD HDTV. If your receiver is a bit older I guess you should change it to a receiver that can support your LCD HDTV and Blu-ray new features.
