Hey, folks,

So when our very own flick chick, Rachel Cericola was reviewing "Date Night" on Blu-ray Disc, she had trouble finding the BD-Live features of the disc ("Live Extras"). She tested the disc on both a Samsung BD-P1500 and a Toshiba BDX2700, and on neither player did the "Live Extras" menu option appear in the menu. I then tested the disc on a number of different players currently in the BPBS labs and detected a trend. The new BD-Live feature on this Fox title require an update to the player, and when this update fails, you may not get an error message, but you won't be able to access the BD-Live features of the disc.

Here's what the disc menu looks like if you get the BD-Live features (click to enlarge):

And here's what it looks like if you don't get the BD-Live features (click to enlarge):

In terms of player behavior, here's what we have seen on various Blu-ray players:

  • Samsung BD-P1600: No errors, no "Live Extras" in the menu
  • Samsung BD-P6900: loads the "Live Extras" in menu
  • Toshiba BDX2700: No errors, no "Live Extras" in the menu
  • Panasonic DMP-BDT350: Error message when loading disc "Unable to perform BD-Live Update" - no "Live Extras" in menu
  • Panasonic DMP-BD85 - slow disc loading but "Live Extras" option does appear in the menu
  • Sony PS3: No error messages, slightly delayed disc loading, "Live Extras" does appear in menu
  • Panasonic DMP-BD70V: no error messages, no "Live Extras" in menu
  • LG BD390: First time loading disc, delayed load time, but "Live Extras" did appear in menu - second time loading, extremely delayed loading - 7 minutes of black screen, no menu loaded, no ability to resume or proceeed to menu, eventually just gave up
