Default Panasonic dmp-BD85 - Help with dlna video playback

Hi guys, quite new to these forums however i've been searching through all relevant posts for a couple hours now and have finally resigned to starting a new thread...
My problem is that i have been unable to find any information regarding the codec that can be played through the dlna option.
I'm currently using the wireless usb that came free with my bd85, and have connected to my nas storage device on my network, the problem is that when i select any of the 100's of movies i have stored on the nas, the "can not play" box comes up on screen, all of my movies are currently in .avi format, and so i converted a few randomly to divx format and to no avail... I have just recently read that possibly .wmv works with the bd85 and so i am currently converting a movie to check, i will update this post once i have tested.

Apologies for wall of text ^^ but basically i am asking, what movie codec can be played, through the dlna option of the blu-ray player?

Thankyou for any help you can provide

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The DLNA feature is actually not supported on the BD85 here in the US, though I think you're down under, right? It's only available on their Blu-ray 3D player (DMP-BDT350) here. That said, I happen to have a BDT350 in for testing and tried out the DLNA feature. I'm getting the same results that you get. MP3, WMV, WMA and AVI files all show up, but they're greyed out - trying to play back any of these generates that same "cannot play" error.

The codecs supported on the player include AVCHD, MP3, JPEG, Divx (and Xvid, though this is not formally supported, it works), and MPEG2. MKV files are not supported. AVCHD is only supported from SD card or DVD/Blu-ray (with restrictions on how it is formatted). There are also some limitations to MPEG2 playback. But I can playback MP3, AVI and JPEG files fine from a connected USB flash drive. But support from a flash drive does not equal support from a networked DLNA device.

I'll check in with my contacts at Panasonic to see what *should* work over DLNA. It may be next week before I hear anything back. I had to cover this as part of my review anyway, so I'm glad you asked.

Will post an update when I find out more.

Thankyou for the in depth reply ! I'm also able to get these avi files working perfectly if I connect a USB, however as you said this doesn't compare to the ability of streaming the 1000s of movies stored on my 4tb nas... I can also now confirm that avi, divx, mpeg-2 and wmv are all unable to play through the wireless dlna feature... I'm eagerly awaiting on your reply from panasonic..

Oh and yes I'm in aus (down under) hehe and thankyou for the welcome

Edit: fixing my horrible late night spelling lol

Well apparently the word from Panasonic is that the DLNA support on the current generation players is pretty limited. If your player sees a file that it supports, then the filename should be active and clickable (not grayed out). Some are limitations of DLNA itself, and some are limitations on the specific DLNA implementation on the current generation players. In the US, this involves only the DMP-BDT350 player. Outside the US, it involves the DMP-BD85 and BMP-BDT350. Of the files you list above, only the MPEG-2 files should play over DLNA on your player.

Here are the Video codecs (and their corresponding audio codecs) currently supported by the 2010 Panasonic Blu-ray players over DLNA:

PS Video: MPEG2; Audio:AC3, LPCM, MPEG AUDIO
    TS Video: MPEG2, H.264; Audio: AAC, AC3, EAC3, HE-AAC, LPCM, MPEG AUDIO

My Panasonic contact said that Divx is not officially supported by current DLNA standard, but the Windows7 DLNA server may be able to transcode to another format, in which case a Divx source file on a Windows7 PC could be played from a Panasonic player.

In terms of the actual file extensions/file types, these shouldn't be relevant as the player should detect the underlying codec, regardless of filetype, but these are a few of the file types one would normally see for compatible video files:

TS Video: *.mts, *.m2ts, *.tts, *.mpeg, *.mpg
    PS Video: *.mpeg, *.mpg

Now I must say that I don't have a whole lot of experience with DLNA so I can't really answer much beyond these superficial details. If you are not able to get MPEG2 files to stream over DLNA then your best bet is probably to contact Panasonic support.

    Good luck!

Was just wondering if there had been any progress with this? I am having the exact same issue. I have tried multiple media server packages (Nero, TVersity, Twonky, and a few others i cant remeber the names of), and am having no luck.

I have called Panasonic customer care who kept telling me 'it should just work'.... Very helpful!

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I would also like to know if anyone has made progress with this.

I have a Panasonic Viera TH-P42V20 hooked up to a Panasonic Blu-ray Disc Home Theater model SC-BTT755. I also have the Panasonic wi-fi dongle.

I've been wrestling with trying to get movies streaming from a TVMOBiLi server for around 2 weeks now. I can play music - mp3 files - perfectly to either the TV or the HT, moving the dongle from one to the other for testing.

If I have the dongle in the TV, I can play DIVX & AVI movies. I haven't tried anything else.

If I move it to the HT I can't play any movies. Same problems as already reported.

I'm confused as to why Panasonic has what appears to be a pretty good DLNA implementation on their TV's but not their BD players in a home theater. Even the interface on the TV is slick compared to the HT.

The guys from TVMOBiLi have bent over backwards trying to get this working & I've just stumbled across this thread.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Default streaming movies via dlna

I have a Panasonic BT230 bluray home cinema system and have been suffering with the same problems as have been listed by others. Following a previous post I convered an avi file to a TS video format with Total Video Converter. This was partially successful im that it played the file but the problem was that it kept stuttering ever20 seconds or so. I will continue to try different settings within the software to try to overcome the stuttering and will post the results. If anyone has had any success playing movie files using dlna I would love to know. I have tried contacting Panasonic support, but they are useless!!

    Hi All,

I have the Panasonic DMP-BD85 and have had heaps of trouble playing videos via DLNA - plays my AVi file fine via USB but cannot play via DLNA.

I don't know very much about video formats but after numerous conversion programs and testing different file formats, I was playing around today with "Any Video Converter Professional" and chose as the output profile DVD video Pal Movie and the convertered files play via DLNA - but given it is a trial version the file is limited to 3 minutes.

If someone knows more about video formats they might be able to work out what is required to convert the files from this? Alternatively if anyone knows of a free converter let me know.

    Hope this helps

    Stephen

I have just had a reply from Panasonic, 2 months after posing the question what formats can be played using dlna. The answer is as follows, "In response, I would explain that unfortunately only the Disc and USB can be used for DIVX, the DLNA feature only supports MPEG2 format videos."
If anyone has any joy using MPEG2 format please post.
