Lossy DTS sound is what you're supposed to get over fiberoptic and coax S/PDIF outputs when the Blu-ray player plays a disc with a DTS-HD soundtrack. And Dolby TrueHD tracks will be delivered over fiber/coax as standard Dolby Digital. But both should be 5.1, assuming you have selected a multi-channel track on the disc.

If you get 2-channel sound from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on Blu-ray, then the only thing I can think of is that you may have set the player's digital output to "PCM" instead of bitstream. If the player's digital output is set to PCM, then everything will go out over S/PDIF digital connections as 2.0 PCM. The other thing to look at is make sure that HDMI audio output is set to OFF on the player (assuming the Sony has that setting). Otherwise the initial HDMI/EDID handshake between the player and the TV may tell the player to go into two-channel mode, since the TV is a two channel device.

BTW, I just tested this (Transformers: ROTF Blu-ray connected via fiberoptic to a Pioneer receiver) and did get the 5.1 channel DTS track as expected. Different player (Panny BD85) but this at least shows that there is no problem with the disc.

Good luck and let us know if you figure it out.

That's interesting. The BD Audio mix setting is what mixes in menu sound effects and BD Secondary Audio. This means the Sony player must have to convert the audio to PCM first in order to do the mixing (which is expected), and once it's PCM, it isn't able to remix the audio back to Dolby or DTS. I'm not 100% positive but I think other players are able to remix the output back so that you still get surround sound even when there are menu sound effects and BD Secondary Audio. That sound would be lossy DTS or Dolby (which is the best you can get over S/PDIF anyway), but it would be 5.1 channel at least.

It's not a big deal though. The only thing you need to be aware of is that if you watch a PiP commentary track (Bonus View) on Blu-ray Disc, you will need to set BD Audio Mix back to "On" otherwise you won't hear the commentary audio track. This is different from a standard DVD commentary track which you will hear with the current setting.
