    Smile bds2900

Hey chris hope all is well, notice Yamaha has a new bd player(bds2900),
Have you had a chance to play withit yet?
Looks like they have added a feature for low LFE channel only to help with the problems that plagued the other bd player(bd80) with the sub bass management but it's a little on the high side(700 to 1000) price range, was kinda hoping that they would be able to do a firmware upgrade to add this feature to the bd80, guess I will have to think about a new purchase if all checks out on the bds2900, lot cheaper than buying a new receiver..

    Hi,

No, I haven't had a chance to check out any Yamaha players yet. We did just get in the new Pioneer (BDP-320) which will be next up for review. But the BD-S2900 is not a new player. It came out last fall and it doesn't offer on-board decoding of the lossless codecs, nor BD-Live support, so I'm not sure this is the one you mean. Here's a review from Secrets of Home Theater and Hifi:

As for adding a subwoofer boost to the player itself, it's unlikely that any of the current players will be updated with a "fix" for this issue because it's not actually a bug. There are players that offer an option to boost the subwoofer level of the analog output (OPPO and high-end Denon, I believe), but this is not considered a best practice due to the risk of input overload on the receiver. Really this boost should be performed in the receiver or preamp/processor, not in the player.

That said, I know the OPPO BDP-83 has a subwoofer level boost option in the player, though we have not reviewed it, and I believe one of Denon's high-end super-expensive models also offers this feature. For your purposes, if your receiver does not accomodate subwoofer boost for the multi-channel analog inputs, then you might consider the OPPO which sells for $499. Here's a link:

Thanks for the Benchmark testing site, some very interesting info, I will definitely take a close look at the Oppo, sounds like a very good player, and again thanks for the insite.
