Hey Joe!
Great review...except I think you're mistaken about something.
After reading the Watchmen book, I understood that this all took place in an alternate sort of Universe, in which there is an entirely different sense of time/space/etc. Nixon is not still present because of his popularity from the war, I actually believe he's still there because of some sort of time continuation. It's really confusing, but it's a big part of the story. You see some of it with Dr. Manhattan in the way he is able to see what is going to happen before he happens. I wish I could defend my point better, it's just really confusing. But if you read the book, you'll get a better picture of it.
I also enjoyed the realness of the Watchmen. Never before have "superheros" been so easy to relate to.
Anyways, stranger, I enjoy your reviews. Glad to see you survived the triangle.

Hi Lindsey,
Thanks for writing! You're correct: Watchmen takes place in an alternate timeline, one in which President Nixon is still the president in 1985.
In the graphic novel (and the movie), it is mentioned that Nixon is still president because he won the Vietnam war and America was so thankful that he was able to repeal the two-term limit and remain president. I don't have the exact page number, but I'll look around for you. Also, you can find this info on Wikipedia (search for Nixon on this page) and on the Watchmen timeline (look for 1975).
Dr. Manhattan's ability to see through time, so that the past and future are as one, is a result of his omnipotent power but doesn't affect Nixon's ability to stay president (except for the fact the Dr. M won Vietnam for him).
Thanks!
Joe
