    Default HDMI connection issues

    Hi guys,

I recently bought an Onkyo TX-SR705 av receiver and a Panasonic BD-DMP35 bluray player to go with a Pioneer 50" 1080i plasma screen which is nearly 5 years old. I have cable tv connected via HDMI to the reciever and output to the tv also via HDMI - this works perfectly. The problem is that i cannot do the same with the bluray player. It only works when it is connected via component to the reciever, not HDMI. I have tried every setting i can think of on both the reciever and the bluray player to no avail including changing the output to of the bluray player. However, i tried connecting the bluray player directly to the tv via HDMI and this worked fine so it seems that the reciever is having trouble passing on the signal to the tv.

Is there just an incompatability issue or is there anything i can do??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi, Kylie,

When you mix and match new sources with older displays, it's common to have HDMI "handshake" issues due to the HDCP copy protection inherent in the HDMI protocol. I know of several people using the x05 generation Onkyo receivers (and their Integra-branded counterparts) with the BD35 and BD55 with no problems, myself included. So it's not specifically a player/receiver compatibility issue, but it could very well be a player/receiver/display compatibility issue.

There are a few things you can try however:
    • The Onkyo/Integra receivers and pre/pros can have problems with some HDMI sources when the OSD (on screen display) is set to its "immediate display" mode - this displays things like the volume on the connected monitor's screen. The Samsung BD-P2500, for example, when set to 1080p/24 mode (24 FPS output) cannot get a signal through to a display with the Onkyo's OSD active. Look in Onkyo's set-up menu for "miscellaneous settings" and then "OSD" and then "immediate display" then try setting this to OFF and see if this helps.
    • Your display supports up to 1080i input resolution, but your receiver supports 1080p. It's possible that your player is requesting the EDID information (basically a chip that identifies the capabilities of an HDMI device), and the receiver is saying 1080p so the player is sending 1080p. But the display itself cannot support that resolution. In this case, you can try manually setting the BD35 output resolution over HDMI to "1080i" instead of auto or 1080p.
    • If the above does not help, then try powering everything off, then power up the TV *first* and leave it on for a few seconds before powering up the receiver (and make sure the receiver is set to the correct input) and finally power up the player last. This may also allow the player to correctly obtain the resolution information for the ultimate display instead of for the intermediate device (the receiver). If this works, then just remember to always power the TV up first (or you can program this into a universal remote if you're using one).

Let us know if you have any luck with any of the above. It is possible that it won't help, but hey, the new Panasonic plasmas are a lot cheaper now then when you bought one 5 years ago and a newer model will not have the problem.

    Later,
