Default Do Sony 24p True Cinema TVs support native 24p?

Do you know if the Sony 24p True Cinema TV's support native 24p?

I am an audio post/sound designer looking to play HD 23.976fps quicktimes from a video post house. I don't need a big set, 37 inch maybe, and don't need super high end. But I suppose tv's that play this frame rate are high end. Just don't need to spend a bunch of money. Any guidance to one of these tv's that won't break the bank would be appreciated.

    Hi, Bob,

Sorry, missed this one as it was hiding in the 24p plasma thread and the Sony TVs are LCD. I moved it to its own thread. Sony's "24p True Cinema" feature is billed as being a native 24p mode but I haven't tested any of these TVs to see if that claim is accurate. I think it's called something else in the US though. Are you in the US or UK as the native 24p feature is generally called different things in different countries as it requires different frame rates, depending on the material (PAL vs. NTSC) and the power system (50 Hz or 60 Hz).

For a set to "natively" support 24p sources at a multiple of 24, it must have a refresh rate option that is a multiple of 24 Hz: 48 Hz, 72Hz and 96 Hz have been used on plasma TVs, and 120 Hz and 240 Hz refresh rates have been used on LCDs to provide this support. On a 120 Hz LCD set, the feature is typically called "5:5 pulldown" as they duplicate the 24p frame 5 times (5x24=120). But not all 120 Hz or 240 Hz TVs support native 24p content. Some convert it to 60 Hz using 3:2 pulldown then double it to 120 Hz.

If you're in the US, or buying US model TVs, you will still need to go toward the higher end of the lines to get sets that support native 24p modes. Here are a few that I am pretty sure support native display of 24p sources in the 37 inch to 40 inch range:

This is by no means a comprehensive list but these are some of the more affordable 120 Hz and 240 Hz sets in that size that (by all indications) do provide native 24p support.

    Hope it helps!
