Question Good OLD Stereo - Desperate for Help

I am lost. I have Harmon Kardon AVR520 and it does not have HDMI.
I was told to use HDMI from PS3 and Cable Box to our HDTV. Then I was told to use Optical fom PS3 and Cable Box to AVR520 Receiver. I am getting NO sound through our receiver with this setup. I am missing something but don't know what. I want to ensure we get good sound. Your help is greatly apprciated!

Well I don't know about your cable box, but the PS3 definitely supports digital audio output over fiberoptic while the video is passed to the TV via HDMI. Just go to the audio options settings under the PS3's XMB set-up menus and you should see an option there to select the fiber optic output for digital audio (instead of HDMI). Most standalone Blu-ray players actually support concurrent digital output over HDMI and fiber so it would not be a problem, but I think the PS3 is "either/or."

Your cable box may have a similar setting in its set-up menu, or it might not support fiberoptic output while the HDMI output is active.

But if your TV has audio pass-through, then you should actually be able to plug the cable box into your TV using HDMI, then use the TV's fiber-optic digital output and connect this to your receiver. It's possible that your TV can pass the audio signal from your cable box through to your receiver via this method. Some TV's support a raw Dolby Digital 5.1 over their fiberoptic outputs, and some only support 2-channel PCM. But try it out and see what you get.

    Good luck!
