Default Yamaha RXV-465 Problem - Decoder off message

I have been using a Yamaha RXV-465 Receiver for several months with standard connections. I recently reinstalled everything when I finished a built in entertainment center and used HMDI connections for connecting a new Samsumg Blu-ray player and DVR to my Samsung LED television through the receiver. Now I have no sound output. Nothing from the Tuner or other non-HDMI inputs; and the display continues to read "Decoder Off." The video works well, so I know the signal is getting to the TV.

Sorry, I guess I missed this when it came in.

First of all, your receiver has had two firmware upgrades since it was released. You can upgrade the unit yourself using these two links:

    http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Docu...Vx65_vJ030.pdf
    http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Docu...65_VerK032.pdf

These may not affect your issue, but it's always good to have your firmware up to date.

Your receiver does support sound decoding over HDMI, so that's not the problem. But also if you are saying that you are no longer getting sound from *anything* (including the tuner or non-HDMI sources), then it sounds like something more fundamental. In your manual's trouble-shooting section, it does mention two likely culprits for "no sound"

    1. Audio in "1 HDMI" function set-up is set to TV (I guess this routes sound to the TV speakers instead of the main speakers) - Select an option other than "TV" in Function --> Set-up --> 1 HDMI --> Audio
    2. A proper audio decoder is not selected - Display the "OPTION" menu and set decoder to "Auto."

    There's also this one:

"Turn up the volume." but I'm assuming that's not it.

If all else fails, and you've double-checked all your speaker connections, you might want to reset the unit to its factory defaults, which you can do in the ADVANCED SETUP menu (see page 45 of the manual for details).

Anyway, let us know how it goes.

Thanks for you assistance. As it turns out, it was not a problem with connections or settings; the unit was defective. I appreciate that Yamaha has a 2 year warranty and that it was fairly painless to have it repaired; thanks to the Geek Squad and Best Buy. The "motherboard" had to be replaced.
