Red face ONKYO & PANASONIC(True love?)

Hola gurus,as mentioned in a previous post I finally picked up the new Panasonic 60 Blue Ray player.Printed out the Amazon price,Dressed my wife up and unleashed her on a young unsuspecting salesman..er ,clerk at my local Best Buy.He matched the price and I am one happy camper!Well,I have a few questions.I have the Onkyo TX-SR606 AV RECEIVER /Panasonic DMP-BD60 BLUE RAY PLAYER and a BOSE SUB and five cube speakers...Do not laugh...I hate Bose but my wife will not let me set my large speaker system up!Any tweaking with my receiver/Blue Ray player? And since my Bose system will only let Bose speakers work out of the sub, could I run a Polk Audio center, front right/left speakers directly out of the receiver and then run my crappy Bose speakers out of my Bose sub(left side/rear,right side/rear)for a 7.1 setup?OH....ran my ethernet out to my Blue Ray and updated the firmware up to 1.5.....is that the latest for the BD-60?...And if it matters this is all tied into a TOSHIBA MX 195 62" DLP HD TV.Thanx

Always nice to have a hot wife willing to do your bidding. Of course, I would have preferred you bought it at Amazon so we would get the referral credit - these hosting and software bills don't pay themselves, you know!... but I digress...

Well,I have a few questions. I have the Onkyo TX-SR606 AV RECEIVER /Panasonic DMP-BD60 BLUE RAY PLAYER and a BOSE SUB and five cube speakers...Do not laugh...I hate Bose but my wife will not let me set my large speaker system up!
I might have to take back that earlier compliment. D'oh!

Any tweaking with my receiver/Blue Ray player?
I would just use HDMI from player to the receiver, set the digital audio out to bitstream, turn BD-Secondary Audio off (on the player), and let the Onkyo handle the bass management and speaker set-up via Audyssey auto-calibration. Or do the level settings by yourself if you're up to it. If you do it manually, then you need to set Subwoofer to *OFF* or *No* in the speaker set-up menu on the Onkyo because the Bose is not a typical line level-driven powered sub. If you use the Audyssey auto-calibration system on the Onkyo it will do this for you automatically.

And since my Bose system will only let Bose speakers work out of the sub, could I run a Polk Audio center, front right/left speakers directly out of the receiver and then run my crappy Bose speakers out of my Bose sub(left side/rear,right side/rear)for a 7.1 setup?
I'm not 100% sure how your Bose speakers get connected to your receiver, but if they have a 5-channel speaker level input (FR, C, FL, SR, SL) from the receiver, then yes, this could work. Just hook up four of the receiver outputs (SR, SL, BR, BL) to 4 of the inputs on the Bose system and don't use the 5th speaker. The Bose internal crossover should route all bass information for the rear and side channels to the sub and the high/midrange frequencies to the cubes.

Normally I wouldn't recommend mixing and matching speaker brands, but as long as you get 3 identical (or nearly identical) speakers across the front 3 channels, and a nice tight powered subwoofer for the LFE channel, then I think this crazy idea might just work.

OH....ran my ethernet out to my Blue Ray and updated the firmware up to 1.5.....is that the latest for the BD-60?...And if it matters this is all tied into a TOSHIBA MX 195 62" DLP HD TV.Thanx
I think 1.5 is the current firmware for both players (BD60 and BD80). And the display you're using it with shouldn't make a difference to the audio set-up. Just go HDMI into the receiver and HDMI out to the TV. And someone else in the forum pointed out a cool feature with the 606 that was not in the 605 (AFAIK) - the 606 has the option of doing an "HDMI passthrough" while the receiver is off. This will pass the HDMI signal from player to TV unaffected, in case someone in the house is crazy enough to want to watch Blu-ray Discs using the TV speakers (yuck!).

Anyway... good luck. Please use one of the forum links if you decide to buy the speakers. For example:

You can also use any of the links on the "Shop With Us" page to support the site. Good luck and enjoy the player!

No problemo. If you start your Amazon session from any of our Amazon links, then you can put whatever you like in your shopping cart, and we'll get the credit for the referral. And don't worry, we don't get to see the name of the person ordering so feel free to buy your wife some nice lingerie or maybe a vacuum cleaner. OR a nice set of small Polk speakers, because really those would be for HER enjoyment too... right?

    Enjoy the system!
